Trip 5: Day 13 (Louisville)

Sunday in Downtown Louisville is a bit quiet. Many things are closed, the streets are relatively empty, and even the bars and restaurants that are open seem to have a somewhat subdued quality to them. But it's made worse by this Sunday being the day after Thunder on the River. Thunder on the River - just "Thunder" colloquially - is a large annual outdoor festival with food, drinking and music along the Ohio River in Downtown Louisville which climaxes in a fireworks display (hence the "thunder"). It's possible that there's a bit of a hangover of sorts today for the city.

Everything worked out as planned... I think. The drive was very pleasant with relatively light traffic. When I got gas in Bedford, the clerk came on the speaker and accused of leaving my wallet inside. I ignored it at first, as he called on the pump number, and I hadn't even gone inside, but he then did again. That got me a little frustrated (I yelled and sweared, in addition to shaking my head "no"), as I think this is one of those stupid Indiana things that, when lumped together, really got to me after a while and I think that, now that I'm back temporarily, they're getting to me much more than they otherwise would.
When I got to the rental car agency at 11:15am, the small office was full with about six older, fatter people clustered around a desk. The clerk asked if I was returning, and said that I would have to wait if I wanted a receipt, but that sounded terrible, so I left. So I don't know how much I was actually charged for the rental quite yet.

I spent the day cruising bars and eating, just as I had thought I would. I specifically made an effort to check out different bourbons for the purpose of researching which bottle to buy for the trip back to California. But, my goodness, bourbon is expensive... This is why I tend to gravitate toward beer, as premium beer is just a little bit more expensive than crappy beer, while premium bourbon is tremendously more expensive than the crap.
Tomorrow, I do plan on doing something more. Today though, the free trolleys that service Downtown were not running, the buses ran on abbreviated schedules, and most of the places that I could have visited were closed.

Another day without pictures on the "break period," where I do relatively little driving and picture-taking, though I did take a video this morning that I'm uploading now.
