I woke up to clouds and rain, and it's been gray all day long, with rain off and on. I had lunch Downtown, breaking it up between two places on 4th Street: Zoup and Safier. I preferred the latter, as you could get a shwarma for $5 there, and Zoup only had pre-made sandwiches in addition to their soups.
As a visitor, you can obtain a TARC bus pass for a single day at the visitors center at 4th & Liberty, or at Union Station, which is run by TARC and features a night club but no train service. The pass costs $3.50 (credit cards are accepted at the visitors center), the same as two one-way trips on the bus so, if you plan on taking the bus at all during a day, it's a good option unless, of course, you're just doing a one-way for some reason.
Now I'm in the area known as "Original Highlands," a reference to the area farther down Bardstown Road also referring to itself as "Highlands." It's a strip of bars, restaurants, coffee shops and boutiques, broken up by the occasional spurt of chains and strip malls. Highlands has always been my favorite area to spend time in in Louisville, and I think it's always worth the trip out here, even if that means standing and waiting for a bus in the rain. I got my bottle of bourbon, Johnny Drum Private Reserve. It's a 15-year-aged. My bourbon tasting resulted in me most liking the one I drank at "Swank" at the Hyatt Downtown (just kidding; it's called "Sway"), Rowan's Creek. However, the liquor store was out of Rowan's Creek, which is something, I was told, that happens about every week. It also resulted in some big spending: about $30 for three glasses of bourbon, which is more than I spent on the single bottle that I purchased. There is a place in NuLu (a nice but more gentrified area of East Market Street) that supposedly allows you to taste bourbons for $5, but they're closed on Mondays, so this was not an option. I kind of guessed, so I hope I guessed well.
Back to Downtown in the rain.
