Trip 5: Day 22 (Houston)

Not much to mention for happenings yesterday. Sat around on a coffee shop patio in the Montrose while the sun was behind the clouds and the temperature was nice. I had intended to go to a movie in River Oaks, but changed my mind after eating a piece of cake next door to the theater. It is strange how cake can change your mind sometimes. Or maybe it was the mess of the wealthy parading through the "European-style pastry shop," paying too much for flour and sugar and making their own messes for the poor Mexican guy to clean up, without a tip. It was a nice day, but it may have been a senseless trip. I accomplished nothing, though this is more the norm than the exception these days.
No pictures, though I had my camera the whole day. I'm uninspired to take photos of modern-day Houston. Fifteen years ago, I would drive around town, stop periodically, and take photos. Of buildings, apartments, streets, parks, dogs, children... Those photos had a sense of space and period, where I can look at them now and remember the feeling of being there clearly. Now, the streets of Houston are a mess of too many wealthy people with too many cars with too much to do, and my usual Sunday evening drive would be a stressful nightmare now, and the pictures would only re-inspire those feelings. No pictures, because what's worth taking a picture of is surely under construction. More condos, more leasable office space, more flood control, more lane miles, more utilities. The modern-day oil boom is in full swing in Houston, and the city learned nothing from the 70's, except that it was a nice ride and it was nicer to exploit it while it lasted.

Leaving later tonight for Austin. Later after fried shrimp.
